SQ8L - v0.82 alpha (Pc/Free)

sq8l
This is a free emulator of the Ensoniq synth: SQ80.

Changes:
(2007-01-25) V0.82a uploaded; several bugfixes, especially problems with hosts using full-screen should now be fine. Minor code rewrite to further lower CPU demands.

The SQ8L is a software (VST) model of Ensoniq's classic 1980s
synth SQ80. The SQ80 features 3 digital wavetable oscillators
for each of its 8 voices which are fed through analog 4-pole
lowpass filters (-24dB gain) with resonance. Sound parameters can
be modulated by 4 envelopes, 3 LFOs and several MIDI sources.
The SQ80 also has a predecessor, the ESQ1, which can do most of
the same stuff.
Although the technology may seem obsolete, these synths can
produce a wide variety of interesting and extremely usable sounds.
Thanks to the lo-fi oscillators and the analog components it can
sound very digital and dirty, but also very analog and warm.
Which is a good thing because modern synths often tend to sound
rather clean. Now you can experience this great classic synth
with the SQ8L!

The SQ8L ("L" stands for "Light") is the free demo version of the
forthcoming SQ8X ("X" for "eXtended"). Besides any bugs that will
(hopefully) be removed in the full version (see "Known problems")
and planned features that won't find their way into the light
version (see "Things to come..."), there are only a few
limitations. Read more.

NOVUZEIT - Sizzle Spine 1.0

SIZZLE SPINE
Sizzle Spine is an effects plugin with built-in step sequencer.

From the homepage:
Diabolical digital destruction, one step at a time.

IT'S CRUNCH TIME

Distortion is one of the most universally sought after effects. Indeed you can find many variations of the classic "distortion" sound. However, Sizzle Spine is a dedicated step-sequenced distortion unit. As such, you can create never-before-heard-of distortion effects. Imagine taking a drumloop sample, and as said sample loops, it is constantly corroded & crushed in a continually changing manner... the distortion effect always changing in realtime, as quickly or slowly as you see fit. Imagine singing through such a device, having your vocals alternate between clean and crispy at random or timed intervals. Like playing synths? Your leads will sound rawer, more alive than ever before once Sizzle Spine gets ahold of them; have your chord progressions play in time with ever increasing bit-reduction, for example. Want to make some grime beats? Sizzle Spine will take a stale and vapid 808 and mutate it into a ferocious and vicious beast.

It's simple; Sizzle Spine is a brand new form of distortion, for people making brand new types of edgy music.

THE FIRST STEP IS ALWAYS THE HARSHEST

Sizzle Spine works of a simple principle. It takes a series of distortion effects and aligns them to a "column". (There are 8 columns in Sizzle Spine.) Next, Sizzle Spine sequences your incoming source material through each of these columns one at a time using it's proprietary sequencing technology, "FLOW". By using FLOW you can step-sequence the columns one at a time, in any sort of sequencing style you want... be it straight, alternating, skipping, reverse, random, and more. FLOW has all sorts of unique sequencing abilities, including the ability to drive the sequence timing based on an LFO for extreme time variations. Or, if you wish, turn FLOW off, and just use one column at a time.

MORE THAN ONE WAY TO CRUSH A CAT

Sizzle Spine's columns all incorporate a series of distortion effects. Firstly, there's a WAVESHAPER for using vector offsets to directly corrode incoming audio. Next you've got a quality BITCRUSHER to further deprecate the stream. Afterwards comes the RECTIZER, a RECTifying QUANTizer, for severe audio marauding. And lastly, there's a DELAY, with timing offsets ranging from comb-filter like bursts to dub-style echoes. But Sizzle Spine's FX don't stop with its columns. No, there's GLOBAL FX as well! Such as a high-quality MAIN DELAY, and a MODELED ANALOG FILTER with LFO-able CUTOFF and RESONANCE (for sweeping effects!), as well as INCOMING and OUTGOING CLIPPERS, for further sound reduction-to-destruction. That's a lot of FX indeed. But have no fear of overdose, as every single effect in Sizzle Spine has it's own individual WET/DRY slider, as well as a button to simply turn the effect off if not needed, to save CPU cycles.

I CAME, I SAW, I SIZZLED.

As you've read, there's nothing else out there in VST land quite like Sizzle Spine. If you are truly ready for a new distortion box to take your music to the next level, Sizzle Spine is it. An innovative idea, a proprietary sequencing engine, dedicated corrosive FX, a simple layout (fully tool-tipped), fantastic CPU usage, and a price that is simply unbeatable. Have a listen to the .MP3s below while you download the Sizzle Spine demo, and prepare for some seriously searing fun.

If you can't beat 'em, BASH 'EM.

Sagan Technology - Metro 6.3.8.3

This Mac sequencer has been updated. Please see the new System requirements.

Changes:
IMPORTANT: The official system requirements have changed as of 6.1.

IMPORTANT: Metro Documents written with this version will NOT be readable in any version prior to Metro/Metro SE version 6.3.6.

IMPORTANT: OS 9 support has been removed.

IMPORTANT: This is a release candidate, meaning it has been fairly well tested and will most like be the final 6.3 version.

We want our software to be bug free. If you find any bugs please report them here.

New in this version:
• Holding control while closing an effects edit window will now close the editor completely. This works around a problem with Arturia's Moog Modular whereby the editor uses up much of the processor time even when the edit window was hidden.
• Recording MIDI from a plug-in is now disabled unless the user explicitly selects 'Record MIDI' from the effects window's contextual menu popup accessed by control-clicking on the name of the plug-in. Previously, since recording was always enabled, this could cause seemingly spurious MIDI events to be sent in MIDI through.
• A new option in the plug-ins window contextual menu, adds support for AudioUnit plug-ins which do not support sample accurate automation (namely PSP's).

Fixed in this version:
• Better VST 2.4 compatibility.
• Metro was not reading/converting old Metro 4 data files correctly on Intel Macintoshes.
• In very rare cases it was possible that an operation on section events (time/key sigs or master volume) could cause automation on other tracks to become messed up.
• Importing a MIDI file was leaving the file open in some cases.
• Inserting Master volume events via the continuous data dialog during playback would likely fail.
• Audio scrubbing was not working correctly.
• Setting the selection filter to the first n of m notes, could cause a crash.
• In rare cases, when working with an aggregate audio device, it was possible that the device would stop responding requiring an audio reset to get the device back.
• Transpose was changing the selected notes in some rare cases.
• Entering text via the keyboard was causing crashes in older carbon based VST plug-ins (PPC only).
• Software audio through was broken on Intel Macs when the recording bit depth was set to 32.
• Software audio through would not restart after clearing an entire record-enabled track.
• If audio glitches occurred, the play bar would be out of sync with the audio.
• If a key signature event occurred at the same exact time as a Tempo change event, the tempo could be messed up for virtual instruments.
• Selecting a new folder or adding files to the existing Jukebox while the Jukebox was playing could have failed.
• Selecting a new track output would not mark the document as changed.

System requirements: *

* Apple Macintosh PowerPC (>200Mhz processor recommended). G4 processor required for G4 Version. To use the software audio through feature a 450 MHz G4 processor or equivalent and a full duplex audio driver (a driver with synchronized input and output) is required.
* Mac OS 9.1 to 9.2.x, 9.2.2 recommended.
* Under OS X, 10.2 or higher required.
* 64 MB RAM minimum.
* 10 MB available hard disk space.
* For recording/playback at greater than 16 bit and 44.1 khz third party audio hardware required.
* Core Audio or ASIO support may require compatible hardware and/or drivers.
* Fast hard disk (7200 rpm) strongly recommended.
* Internet connection required for registration. Optional for web help.

Metro is a fast-operating, easy-to-learn high-powered sequencer for the design of professional audio projects. It stands alone as a complete and integrated MIDI, audio and video production system.

The audio system supports up to 64 audio tracks. Each track can have its own effect chain. Eight aux busses are also supported. Each with their own chain. Chains can be made up of VST effects and/or AudioUnits (OS X only). VST 2.0 is supported. All effects can be automated. Real-time editing is encouraged. Software audio play-thru allows the original audio to be recorded regardless of what plug-ins are currently in use.

The MIDI system has been around since the 1980's and is the most versatile and stable product of its kind on any platform. Metro combines all the functionality expected from a professional Macintosh MIDI sequencer with a simplified interface and innovative ideas, such as the Rhythm Explorer™ and the algorithmic Note Spray Paint tool. This MIDI system has been updated to support CoreMIDI and VST technologies.

The video system uses Apple's QuickTime technology for recording, applying video effects and overlaying text.

Complex projects can now be completed simply and elegantly.

u-he - More Feedback Machine v2.0 (Pc/Mac/Universal)

morefeedbackmachine
Here is another delay effect plugin. Seems nice though. You can download a public beta right now.

From the homepage:
Delay Heaven

Where to begin? - More Feedback Machine has always been a synonym for ultra flexible delay effects ranging from bread & butter stuff to weird rhythmic deconstructions. MFM1 was well ahead of its time in the early days of native plugins. Now, MFM2 does not break with that tradition.

The idea behind MFM is giving the musician as much control over 4 separate delay lines as possible, and having them interact as well as having means to modulate delay parameters in realtime.

Delay x 4

As any cool delay, MFM can sync to host tempo. If you prefer milliseconds, they're here as well. If you look for something comb filter, you can tune MFM2's delays chromatically.

4 identical delay lines provide for 4 taps - each with panning, filter, output level and lots of feedback options. As with any u-he software, option is the key word. There are lots of options, but yet the concept of MFM2 is quite simple, keeping the beast easy to use!

Feedback Control

The heart of MFM2 is the feedback matrix, found in the center of its editor window. There are several pre-defined matrices that cover most needs for almost any type of delay effect, including ping pong, multitap and feedback delay networks for reverb-type effects. A User Matrix lets one choose the amount of feedback from each delay line into each other - which was the standard in MFM1.

Naturally each delay line has a resonant multimode filter that by default sits in the feedback path, in order to create damping, rising or moving delays. But this filter can also be placed at other points in the signal flow, such as the input or the output, individually for each delay line.

In addition, delay lines 1 & 2 and 3 & 4 have a set of so-called Matrix Effects that add further means to mangle the delay feedback. These include saturation, bitreduction, frequency shifting (sideband filter) and phasing effects for each of both pairs.

A big knob on the top of the window controls the overall feedback amount. But if it's too much feedback, there's the infamous Panic button right next to it!

Modulation!

The easiest way to cover the topic of modulation would be: There's nothing that can not be modulated! - Expanding that a bit further, here are some examples:

Put LFOs on delay times to create warm and subtle chorusing effects. Really warm sounding delays are one of MFM2's speciality.

Play delay times over MFM2's built-in keyboard control to create tuned comb filter effects - this takes MidiNotes in hosts that support Midi input to effects, but it can also be automated in hosts that don't.

Use Multistage envelopes to create evolving filter sweeps or gating effects - the Multistage envelopes can be triggered by MidiNotes or the built-in keyboard control.

While the above mentioned modulations are pretty obvious, check out the presets for the really weird stuff. The possibilities are endless.

Price: $79

Neuenberger - TigerDelay (Pc/Free)

This is a FREE delay plugin for Windows.

From the homepage:
Do you need good delay effects in your production? A Delay that supports filtering and ducking, that is synchronized with your musical tempo? A Delay, flexible to bend the input as much as it is needed for your production? TigerDelay, with nice sound results, yet easy to use, is the solution.

Since Ducking Delay is one of the most needed effects and I was reading in one forum that an effect like this is needed, here is the simple solution. Furthermore it allows filtering with a resonant filter so that the sound can be bended as much as you like. The filter supports even self-resonance.

Actually this is the first release, it was built using experience in JellyVST as well.

Technical details:

The Signal is filtered with a flexible and resonant 24dB lowpass filter, then delayed and fed back. With the additional Ducking the dry/wet is regulated so that either the dry or the delayed signal is returned as result, based on wether there is an input signal or not.

Parameters:

Tempo (either in ms, or as notevalue (1/4, 1/8 dotted, 1/16 Triplet etc)

Sync/Async to beat

Ducking

Dry/Wet

Feedback

Cutoff

Resonance

Currently supported Operating System is only Windows 32. The software has been tested with Windows XP service Pack 2 and Cubase (R) SE 1.0.7

Filter:

24dB LowPass with resonance
Since a picture says more than 1000 words, I put a screenshot here for the time being.

Blue Cat's FreqAnalyst (Pc/Free)

FreqAnalyst
FreqAnalyst is a FREE spectrum analyzer.

Blue Cat's FreqAnalyst is a frequency analyzer that lets you monitor the spectral content of your audio signal in real time. It has been designed to provide extreme smoothness and high resolution for both time and frequency: unlike most spectrum analyzers, Blue Cat's FreqAnalyst is able to display continuous variations even with a very high frequency resolution, thanks to its unique smooth interpolation algorithms.

Most aspects of the audio to frequency display conversion can be managed, which lets you total control over the monitoring. A special thresholding system has been developed to help you see the important parts of the spectrum easily. In case you need extra precision in a particular frequency range, you can zoom the display and check the part of the graph you are interested in.

As shown in the screenshots, you can use the new opacity management feature to make the plug-in window transparent and see what is behind: forget about your multiple display setup, you do not need it anymore! You can now check the spectrum of your mix and see your audio tracks behind. This feature is also particularly useful when you want to compare the spectrum of two tracks: just stack your two FreqAnalyst windows and see the difference!

This plug-in supports Blue Cat's skinning language, so that you can customize the user interface to your personal needs.
